How Can I Help?

Women as Career Coaches celebrates women - their goals, pathways, and accomplishments. Young women need access to adult role models who are willing to share their career pathways and encourage the goals and dreams of youth. To meet this need, The Halton Industry Education Council, in partnership with the Ontario Women's Directorate, Partners for Change Initiative, is pleased to present the annual Women as Career Coaches event.

Careers Unlimited is an informal walk about career fair where parents and students can talk with over 100 different exhibitors about their career paths and occupations. In the past, Careers Unlimited has helped more than 4,000 students, parents and community members gather information about the variety of options available to them in the world of work.

The Grade 8 Program conveys a positive message to all students, revealing all the options available to them and giving them a great starting point as they begin thinking about the future. The program consists of two key components: a 10-week in-school portion of the Real Game, which explores topics such as budgeting, time management, and the importance of choices, and a class trip to the HIEC Career Centre. The Career Centre visit is a two hour career awareness workshop, where students discuss their dream jobs, receive an introduction to the Career Planning Process and discover the importance of exploring options related to their interests, skills and values.

Breakfast with the Mayors is a spring and fall event hosted by the Mayors of Halton. Each event presents a featured speaker who offers an industry or education perspective to over 130 participants. It provides a forum for business people to be updated on educational issues and an opportunity for educators to gain up to date information which is relevant to student learning.

The Halton Apprenticeship Advisory Council (HAAC) was created in December 1998 in response to the skilled labour shortage in Halton Region. Under the Halton Industry Education Council, HAAC is a community effort of business, education, government and labour, meeting regularly (usually monthly) to identify, communicate and resolve problems inherent in skilled labour shortage. The Council's structure is informal to encourage networking and open communication. Each year, HAAC presents its Honour Roll awards to companies that demonstrate excellence in the promotion of the skilled trades in Halton.

The Halton Industry Education Council has a part in many programs and events that run each academic year. In addition to the programs outlined above, HIEC can always use your support in other areas whether it be the donation of office equipment or technology, volunteering your time or supporting us in the development of new programs and services, your help will benefit us as we continue to inspire young people to make informed career decisions.
